Double GH Farms
The Hurleys have roots in the hills of Northwest Georgia that go much further than the establishment of the operation now known as Double GH Farms LLC. Father and son duo Greg and Garrett Hurley are now farming land that has been in the family for five generations. Located in Chattooga County, which is situated between Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Rome, Georgia, is the rural town of Summerville, Georgia.
What began as a way to survive slowly grew into a way of life. The Hurley operation found its footing when Greg’s father, James “Bo” Hurley, and his brother Wayne returned home from military service. Bo worked as a supervisor at a Bigelow-Sanford carpet mill, while Wayne took on various jobs, both doing whatever it took to keep their families going. Resourceful and hardworking, they were innovators in their time, finding ways to make progress with whatever tools they had.
In the mid-1970s they took a leap and began to diversify their cotton, corn, and cattle operation by planting their first patch of Bermudagrass. Bo and Wayne began to custom sprig Bermudagrass for the public a couple of years later. Things were progressing well for the brothers until Bo unexpectedly passed away from what was described as a stress-induced aneurysm. With the future uncertain, Greg stepped up to the plate, following in the footsteps of his dad, and began a partnership with his uncle Wayne. The two of them leased new ground and continued the sprigging business, which spanned across North Georgia, Northeast Alabama, and Southern Tennessee. The custom sprigging business was successful and continued for more than three decades. The farm then had the opportunity to rent several new farms, allowing them to expand the row crop side of the operation, eventually leading them to transition out of the custom sprigging business completely.
While the farm was growing in the 1990s, so was Greg’s family. Greg and his wife Kim had their son Garrett. Growing up, Garrett could never get enough of the farm, so naturally he chose to work for the family operation directly after high school. He worked with Wayne and Greg until 2021, when Wayne passed away after an extended illness.
That same year, Greg and Garrett formed Double GH Farms LLC, marking a new era for the family. The transition brought its share of challenges, but with persistence, and faith, they pushed through. The operation today includes Greg, Kim, Garrett, his wife Sarah, and their two children, Rett and Baylee, a new generation learning to love the farm and rolling fields just as those before them did.
Greg and Garrett run the day-to-day operations on the farm, raising cotton, corn, soybeans, cattle, and hay, while Kim (a pharmacy technician) and Sarah (a first-grade teacher) keep everything else running smoothly behind the scenes.
Through seasons of growth, hardship, and blessing, the Hurley family credits Faith and the goodness of God for carrying them forward. Today, they are honored to be a small part of the vision of Magnolia Loom, a company that believes in Georgia cotton, Georgia farmers, and the greater good of our country.
